In the opening tournament of the fall season, the star-studded Western New Mexico University men’s golf team is in third following a strong outing by All-American Thomas Neve after the first two rounds of the RMAC North Invitational at the Heritage at Todd Creek Golf Course Monday.
Led by four golfers in the top-15, WNMU fired rounds of 285 and 298 to card a 583, five-strokes ahead of Colorado Christian and eight-shots behind UC-Colorado Springs. Colorado State University-Pueblo leads the field with a three0under 573, good for a two-stroke lead. The ThunderWolves also have the top individual in Neil Tilman who opened with a 139, giving him a one-stroke lead.
Neve is also nipping on Tilman’s heals as the senior fired a three-under 69 to open the day before adding an even round 72 for a 141 to tie for third. He was tied for second in birdies with 10, added an eagle and was second in par-four scoring (4.00). Fellow senior All-American Calum Hill had similar rounds of 73 and 74 to post a 147 and is tied with newcomer junior Jaime Waltmire as they are both tied for 12th with 147’s after Waltmire opened with a 69 and then ended with a 78. The trio of the Mustang All-Americans, junior Harry Wetton shot two-over on each round carding 74’s for a 148 which has him in a tie for 15th. He was just behind Neve in par-four scoring tying for third (4.05). Sophomore Ross White is tied for 50th after opening with a 79, him trimmed a stroke off in the second round with a 78 to end with a 157.
Freshman Robbie Kemsley, playing in his first rounds as a Mustang, entered the field as an individual and tallied a first round 77 before withdrawing in the second round.
WNMU was second on the list in terms of birdies rolling in 35. They also added an eagle and were second in the field in par-four scoring (4.20).
WNMU will wrap up the RMAC North Invitational on Tuesday morning.
