(Silver City, NM) On Thursday, July 9, It Takes a Village will be holding it's first "Great Conversation." The event will take place at the Volunteer Center, 501 E 13th St, from 6pm-7:30pm. After short presentations from Andra Olney - Larson and Jason Burke, the "Great Conversation" (community discussion) on homelessness will begin. "
Jason Burke, Director of It Takes a Village says, "This is the first issue that our supporters chose for us to work on, and this facilitated discussion will decide how we will focus our efforts locally." One of the unique policies of It Takes a Village, is that its customers, volunteers, and donors are solely responsible for deciding which issues it works on. Burke adds, "This ensures that we are doing what the community wants us to. It is a new model and one that we know will evolve over time."
The purpose of the organization is to "support education, activism, and social change in our community," It also operates a store located at 114 W Market St in downtown Silver City. Specifically, it is at the corner of Market and Texas Streets, across from Javalina Coffee Shop. The store has a used book section of approximately 10,000 books, as well as new fair trade items, bumpers stickers and the creations of local artists and artisans.
