The New Mexico Association of Counties Elects New Vice President

Santa Fe, New Mexico – The New Mexico Association of Counties (NMAC) elected a new Vice President at its Board of Directors meeting in Santa Fe at the NMAC 2016 Legislative Conference on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. Taos County Commissioner Gabriel Romero was elected as the new Vice President. He fills the vacancy left by Hidalgo County Treasurer Tyler Massey who was elected the President Elect at the October 16, 2015 NMAC Board meeting. Commissioner Romero assumes his new responsibility immediately fulfilling the partial term until the NMAC Annual Conference in June.

Commissioner Romero currently represents District 3 in Taos County which includes Ranchos de Taos, Llano Quemado, Talpa, Cordillera, Pilar, Ojo Caliente, Carson, and Tres Piedras all the way to the Colorado border. He serves on various non-profit boards including the Taos County Economic Development Corporation and the El Valle Water and Sanitation District. At the national level, he serves on the National Association of Counties (NACo) Agriculture and Rural Affairs Policy Steering Committee. He owns a small farm in Llano Quemado actively raising rare Navajo Churro sheep, llamas, emus, Nubian goats, and other various animals. Commissioner Romero is in the real estate business, and is in the discernment stage to study and become a deacon with the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.

"I am humbled and honored by the recent vote taken by the NMAC Board of Directors to elect me as the new Vice President of NMAC," said Commissioner Romero. "I look forward to serving in this capacity and will do my best to represent admirably not only the residents of Taos County, but also the residents of every New Mexico county."

This honor is truly a significant milestone for any county elected official and is based upon their hard work, local government involvement, and ability to address the critical issues important to New Mexico communities. "Commissioner Romero brings a wealth of experience in county government to NMAC as vice president, and he will be a strong advocate for counties," said Steve Kopelman, NMAC Executive Director. "He is well respected and is extremely skillful at problem solving and bringing people together. I am very excited to be working with Commissioner Romero in his new position."

The New Mexico Association of Counties is a non-profit, nonpartisan association representing and serving New Mexico's 33 counties.
