Silver City, January 19, 2016 – The Silver City Community Theatre recently held auditions for their March production of Last Of The Red Hot Lovers, by award-winning playwright Neil Simon.
Director Wynne Holman, a newcomer to the Silver City theater scene, said, "I was absolutely thrilled with the turnout, very pleased, and quite impressed with all the readings. There was merit in each of the readings, and had this show a larger cast, each and every one would have a role."
Ms. Holman's audition process had a unique twist. Each female actor was paired with a male actor for a scene read-through, continually switching partners until every female actor had read with every male actor. "I don't think I've ever worked so hard in an audition," said Doug Abbott, who will appear in the role of Barney Cashman in the production. "Wynne was thorough and methodical, and because she's new to the Silver City theatrical community, she didn't have any preconceived notions based on the actors' past work."
Last of the Red Hot Lovers is an adult-oriented play, one of the most amusing of Neil Simon's comedies, with a perspective on human nature that is as relevant today as it was for its first performance. It focuses on Barney Cashman, a middle-aged restaurateur who feels his long-time marriage is growing stale, and is worried that he might be missing out on the sexual revolution. His solution is to invite three women, separately, to his mother's Manhattan apartment with the intention of enjoying a romantic dalliance. The resulting encounters are delightfully witty as the hapless Barney discovers the difficulties of finding a partner for his extramarital affair.
In addition to Doug Abbott in the role of Barney, Sally Hagel will play neurotic sexpot Elaine; Wendy Spurgeon will play the kooky, uninhibited actress Bobbi; and Gwen Payne will appear as Jeanette, a gloomy, depressed housewife.
Last of the Red Hot Lovers is scheduled for the evenings of Tues-Wed, March 22-23, and Tues-Wed, March 29-30. Performances will be at 7:00 PM at Light Hall; admission will be $10. Tickets will be available in March at Jumping Cactus Coffee House, Yankee Creek Coffee House, Gila Hike and Bike, and at the door before performances.
The Silver City Community Theatre was founded in 2014 for the purposes of providing diverse theatrical entertainment to the community, and also presenting the opportunity for members of our community to develop and showcase their acting talents, or to exercise the many other skills that are crucial to a successful theatrical production.
