The New Mexico Makerstate Initiative: 2016 Spring Makerspace Tour is visiting the Silver City Public Library to present hands-on science, technology, engineering, art, and math learning activities. The Makerstate Initiative will offer two free hands-on workshops for ages 7 and up on January 21 and 22. The first workshop will be Speaker Making on Thursday, January 21, 4:00-6:00pm. Each participant will have the opportunity to create DIY speakers, learning about magnets, sound and electricity in the process. There will be a limit of 20 participants. The second workshop will be Soap Making and 3D Printing on Friday, January 22, 4:00-7:00pm. Each participant will have the opportunity to create their own DIY soaps in the shape of 3D printed molds, combining chemistry with technology. There will be a limit of 12 participants. There will be no pre-registration for the workshops; instead, tickets will be handed out starting 30 minutes before the event. The Silver City Public Library is located at 515 W. College Avenue in Silver City.
"The library is very excited to be able to host these fun, interactive learning opportunities," said Lillian Galloway, programming and outreach librarian. "The workshops have been scheduled in the late afternoon in the hope that many youth ages 7 and up will be able to attend."
This year the New Mexico Makerstate Initiative is led by Miles Tokunow of the Center for Cultural Technology (www.cctnewmexico.org) and is administering workshops across the state, taking advantage of libraries' role as places for discovery and collaboration. The Makerstate Initiative is made possible by a partnership with the New Mexico State Library, the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, New Mexico Highlands University, and AmeriCorps. The project goal is to elevate communities through hands-on experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). The Initiative encourages participants to reclaim New Mexico's rich culture of making while introducing exciting new technologies in a fun and accessible way.
