Please bear with me, this week I'm sharing several tidbits of information with you. All are important to me... hopefully some of these will pique your curiosity.
Thank you to all the adults and children that helped us clean up Fort Bayard Memorial Cemetary. This pauper's cemetery looks 100% better. It was a hot day. It was Father's Day. Yet we had a great turn-out and we were through by 3 p.m. THANK YOU!
My wife and I enjoyed a great trip to Luna, New Mexico this past Saturday with the Grant County Gem and Mineral Society. We were searching for Luna Blue Agate stones. After Ansel Walters showed me what the rocks looked like... I was on the search. We brought home some beautiful examples of the blue agate. On the way to Luna, the group stopped at Cooney's Tomb just outside Alma, New Mexico. Sgt. James Cooney was scalped by Victorio's Apaches on Mineral Creek after the Sergeant sent word to Silver City that he had not seen a hostile Indian at his camp in over three years. Friends and family carved out a boulder where Sgt. Cooney was killed. They buried him inside the stone sealing the entrance with ore from his own mine. It is an interesting place to visit. Each month this group takes a field trip to some of the most spectacular areas in southwest New Mexico. It has been well worth the $15 a year for a family membership.
The Chamber of Commerce still has a couple of booth spaces available in Gough Park for the July 4th Independence Day Celebration and you can register a parade entry through this Friday afternoon. "Rally Round The Flag" is the theme for this year's festivities. With all the food, music, vendors, parade and the evening's fireworks show... it's going to be a great July 4th celebration. By the way, we still need help to pay for insurance, shipping and fireworks. As of this writing, we have commitments of $800 toward the $3000 needed. Thank you to our current fireworks sponsors: Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Ashburn, Disabled American Veterans group in Grant County, Douglas D. Gorthy, D.D.S., Grant County Beat, and the Silver City Daily Press.
In the past, I have written about how much I like fried barnyard bird... a.k.a. fried chicken. A couple of weeks ago, I came across some really tasty fried chicken and mentioned it to a couple of individuals. One of the guys in the deli section at Albertson's would deep-fry a whole rotisserie chicken. It would have the rotisserie seasoning on it and he would drop it in the fryer for about 20-25 minutes. It came out crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It was a lot like deep-frying a turkey for Thanksgiving. Dang those deep-fried chickens were good. But this past Sunday I received some sad news. When I tried to order a whole fried chicken for my Father's Day supper, I was told they didn't know what I was talking about and the guy that had fried the chickens for me in the past was no longer working at Albertson's. I felt bad. I hope the young man didn't get fired for deep-frying the chicken since it wasn't a regular menu item. Maybe it should become a menu item?
And yes, Town of Silver City officials have confirmed that Dollar Tree is coming to Silver City in the space between Walmart and Tractor Supply. I am aware that there are ladies through-out Grant County that are looking forward to the opening of this new business.
Don't miss the Grand Opening tomorrow (Thursday) for First Financial Credit Union in Silver City. Get a free hot dog and drink, and possibly a chance to catch money in their cash booth. It begins at 11 a.m.
