All-American Harry Wetton climbed nearly into the top-25 as the No. 21 Western New Mexico University men's golf team moved to 13th after the third and final round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate wrapped up on Tuesday at the New Mexico State Golf Course.
The Mustangs posted rounds of 304-300-298 for a 902 to jump past Incarnate Word. University of Texas-El Paso remained in the lead grabbing the title with an 854, 17-strokes ahead of the field. Lamar's Mans Berglund also continued his lead on the individual side with a 209, three-shots ahead of the field.
Wetton saved his best golf for last following a pair of 75's, he fired a 73 on Tuesday for a 223 to tie for 36th. He was just a few strokes away from landing in the top-25. He tallied 34 pars and six birdies, while collecting a solid par-three scoring round of 3.08.
All-American Thomas Neve was right behind as he had consistent scores of 76-74-75 to finish with a 225 and into a tie for 43rd. Neve tallied 35 pars which led all Mustangs. All-RMAC Deryk "Buzz" Perales ended up coming away with the top score of any Mustang during the final round coming away with a 71 after rounds of 80 and 76 for a 227 to tie for 54th. Perales' seven birdies were tops on the team and he also did well in par-three scoring with a 3.17 average.
All-American Calum Hill had scores of 75 to start the tournament and then finished with a 79 for a 229 to tie for 65th. Hill accumulated 32 pars. Rounding out the golfers for WNMU was Jaime Waltmire who carded a 237 with rounds of 78-79-80 to tie for 78th. Waltmire posted five birdies. Ben Skinner competed as an individual and tied for 82nd with a 245 (93-72-80). Skinner had four birdies.
The Mustangs as a team did their best on par-three scoring with a 3.25 average. They tallied 156 pars and 28 birdies.
WNMU will have a quick turnaround as they will compete in the Price's Give 'Em Five Intercollegiate hosted by UTEP Oct. 23-25.
