Thanks to Patricia Cano, President of the Chicano Alumni Chapter, for bringing the idea of having a" Huacha Tournament" for the Chicano Alumni Reunion at the WNMU Alumni festivities which turned out to be a great success. Took a little planning and work but paid off in the end. I was looking at 24 team participation and garnered 25 teams. Some of the participants came from as far as Albuquerque, El Paso, TX, Tucson, AZ and surrounding southwest.

Thanks to all the merchants and individuals who put forth the prize money and make it a success. Without them this would not be possible. The proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Chicano Alumni Chapter Hardship Scholarship Fund.

I have initiated Huacha competition for the Knights of Columbus here in Silver City, competed throughout New Mexico and El Paso tournaments back in the earlier years and have found that this tournament was just as great or even better. The enthusiasm from the competitors was awesome. We had ladies and youngsters and men of age competing. That's how great this sport is!

It's a great sport where anyone can compete and have fun. Often you will see families and friends playing "huachas" in their backyards and gatherings. We have great competitors in Grant County but do not attend these tournaments for one reason or another. It is a great opportunity to show their talent and at the same time have a good time meeting other individuals that like to compete. What better way to make friends.

The Alumni Chapter would like to thank all the compeitors and the volunteers (Barney Jaramillo, Mario Quintana, Chava Puentes, Michelle Carillo and Kayo Varela) for taking the time and effort to also make this tournament a success.
