Bobbi Pierson continued to lead the way for the Lady Mustangs as the Western New Mexico University women’s golf team remained in sixth after the second and final round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference No. 2 South Invitational concluded on Tuesday at the par 72, 5,811 yard UNM Championship Golf Course.
The Lady Mustangs posted a 658 with rounds of 333 and 325, finishing just six-strokes back of Colorado State University-Pueblo for fifth. Midwestern State and MSU Denver went down to the final holes to decide the champion with Midwestern State taking the crown with a 606 to win by five-shots. MSU Denver’s Cha Cha Willhoite won going away on the individual side with a 142, four-shots ahead of the field.
Pierson remained at the top for WNMU as following an opening round 79, she came back on Tuesday to fire an 80 for a 159 to tie for 12th. Pierson finished near the top in terms of birdies with five. Adrianna Grijalva came on strong during the final round trimming five-strokes off a first round 84 to card a 79 to tally a 163 to land in 23rd. Grijalva nearly finished in the top-10 when it came to pars recording 18. Shelby Turner nearly caught Grijalva as she ended up just two-shots back with a 165 after rounds of 83 and 82 put her in a tie for 26th. Turner was almost in the top-15 in terms of par-four scoring collecting a 4.55 average.
Cheyenne Molina finished strong after opening with an 87, she came back on Tuesday to card an 84 for a 171 to tie for 40th. Molina did well when it came to par-three scoring as she was in the top-10 averaging 3.25. Rounding out the golfers for the Lady Mustangs was Gabby Singh as she also had a strong final day coming back with an 87 after an opening 98 for a 185 to tie for 64th. Singh landed in the top-15 when it came to par-three scoring coming away with a 3.38 average.
As a team the Lady Mustangs were strong in par-three scoring posting a 3.42 average which was good for second. They also had a fourth-best 75 pars.
The RMAC No. 2 concludes the fall slate for WNMU, as they will now return to action on Feb. 15-16 at the Lady Rattler Invitational in San Antonio, Tex., at the Dominion Golf Course. The Lady Mustangs ended up finishing sixth in both of the RMAC fall tournaments.
