Southwest Festival of the Written Word

Friday-Sunday, October 2-4, 2015

Silver City, NM

Visit our website www.swwordfiesta.org

This year's Festival program features a significant number of sessions in which one of our outstanding guest authors has the whole hour, alone on the stage, to talk about his or her life as a writer and to engage directly with the audience. These sessions were created to give each author the freedom to select what he or she really wants to impart to the audience. Come enjoy these sessions and meet these wonderful writers.

                                                            History

Chasing History; The Trials, Tribulations and Joy of
Researching, Writing, and Publishing History
Thomas E. Chávez
Friday Oct. 2, 2pm, Silver City Public Library
Every book has a story behind it. That in itself is a bit
of history. This will be a personalized account of the
highlights and lowlights of research, then the "craft" of revealing the research in the written word, and finally the process of publication. Here will be real stories of archival discovery, the value of footnotes, denial, acceptance, and the pleasure of it all. Much of the talk will be based on sections of his most recent book Chasing History:Quixotic Quests for Artifacts, Art, and Heritage.

Mexican political system, the drug trade, and modern Mexican society is non-pareil." In this session, Alfredo
will talk about his life and work.

Demetria Martinez
Saturday Oct. 3, 1:30pm, Old Elks Lodge

sees the two as "ways to explore and bridge borders
between people of different nations, languages, spiritualities and life experiences." Her best-known work is the novel The Block Captain's Daughter, which won a 2013 American Book Award and the International Latino Book Award. Here, Martinez will be interviewed by Jules Nyquist, founder of Albuquerque's Poetry Playhouse, and will answer questions from the audience.
