Bodacious Butterfly Festival Returns June 19-21 to Sugarite Canyon State Park

RATON, NM – Butterfly and bird lovers alike will have a blast at this year's Bodacious Butterfly Festival at Sugarite Canyon State Park on June 19-21, 2015.

"Sugarite Canyon is uniquely situated in a habitat transition zone that attracts and nurtures numerous butterfly species," said Interpretive Ranger Pat Walsh. "Our program this year is full of fun, interesting activities for the entire family!"

The festival kicks off Friday, June 19th at Lake Alice Campground at 7 p.m. with free snacks and a program entitled, "Pollinator Buffet & Climate Café". In the lineup is butterfly expert and author Steve Cary, also known as the "Butterfly Guy", and Laura McCann with NM Raptors, will give two presentations on Saturday with live hawks.

Bodacious Butterfly Festival Schedule:

Friday, June 19:

  • 7 p.m.: Pollinator Buffet & Climate Café at Lake Alice Campground (Rainy Day: Mule Barn)

Saturday, June 20:

  • 7 a.m.: Hummingbird Banding at Visitor Center
  • 8-9 a.m.: Bird Walk & Bird Apps at Visitor Center
  • 9 a.m.: Coffee with a Live Hawk! Coffee & doughnuts at Lake Alice Campground
  • 9:30-11:30 a.m.: Butterfly Walk & Butterfly Apps at Lake Maloya Dam Trailhead
  • Noon: "Make n' Take"/Arts & Crafts at Lake Alice Campground (Rainy Day: Mule Barn)
  • 1:30-3:30 p.m.: Butterfly Walk & Butterfly Apps Soda Pocket Trailhead
  • 4 p.m.: Live Hawks—Second Chance at Lake Alice Campground. (Rainy Day: Mule Barn)
  • 8 p.m.: Butterfly Guy Tells All! (Butterflies & Climate) at Lake Alice Campground

Sunday, June 21:

  • 9-11 a.m.: Butterfly Walk at Lake Dorothey
  • 1-3 p.m.: Butterfly Walk at Visitor Center

This event is free, but regular fees apply for entry to the park. Sugarite Canyon State Park is located about six miles northeast of Raton, via state highways 72 and 526.
